Grotta di Alto

North    20 min. 19 6c ÷ 8b 2001 ÷ 2016
It really looks like the door of the “Averno”: a large mouth of rock placed on the bottom of the valley, on the bank of the river Pennavaire, which seems to make access to the Kingdom of the Underworld; the structure of the crag is beyond the overhanging, almost horizontal and so the climbing style is very physical and athletic. The routes are all difficult, with still some question marks (?) that could be 9a. The place is really impressive and worth a visit, even if only for speleology! The crag is exposed to the north, inevitably fresh. The base is very convenient, but pay attention to the final river ford.

Approach

Reach the village of Alto, enter the village and from the main square turn right towards the cemetery, where you park. Take the path that goes down on the left along the cemetery and reach the wide dirt road that descends to the right, pass the church of St. Sebastian and in a few minutes you get to the base of the crag Corsia. Continue the path on level ground, passing the access to the RedUp (a little stone on the right), for about 800 meters, up to a tree with a small wooden sign with written: “Grotta di Alto”. Take the path that descends to the left, until you reach the river. Cross the river and get to the obvious cave
